What to study

Biology is required. You add chemistry or physics. Each subject has its own official topic list and sample test.

  • Study at university level. The recommended textbooks are US university books.
  • Expect more than multiple choice. The official samples also have short written tasks, like naming a labelled figure or a calculation.
  • Biology is the hard part, by most accounts. Most applicants from 2023 to 2026 say the real biology was much harder than the sample. One 2026 applicant found it easier.

One oral in each subject. A 2025 applicant had one examiner per subject. Some 2026 applicants were mostly asked why they chose medicine.

A model answer

How do insulin and glucagon keep blood sugar steady?

After a meal, blood sugar rises. Beta cells in the pancreas then release insulin. Insulin helps cells take up glucose, and the liver stores it as glycogen. When blood sugar falls, alpha cells release glucagon. Glucagon makes the liver break down glycogen and release glucose. This negative feedback keeps blood sugar in a narrow range.

Your Debrecen questions, answered

Are there Debrecen past papers or sample tests?

No past papers, but Debrecen publishes a sample test for biology, chemistry and physics. The university publishes a sample test for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each sample has two parts. Each part opens with 10 multiple-choice questions with five options, A to E, and one correct answer. Short written tasks with points follow, such as naming a labelled figure or a calculation. The samples state no time limit, no total score and no pass mark. They do not say the real paper has the same number of questions.

Applicants from 2023 to 2026 say the real biology paper is much harder than the sample. Most applicants call chemistry easier than biology. One 2025 applicant called physics very easy.

Is the Debrecen entrance exam hard?

Biology is the hard part, by most accounts. Applicants in 2025 report hormones, family-tree genetics and meiosis in detail. Most call chemistry easy. The recommended textbooks are US university books, so study at that level. One 2026 applicant found the exam easier, even the biology.

What is the pass mark?

Scores are for internal use only, and you are not told yours. The university looks at your overall performance. There are four outcomes: a first-year place, a place on the Basic Medicine Course (a preparatory course), rejection, or an offer of a different programme.

I got the Basic Medicine Course offer. Is that a place in medicine?

No. It is one of Debrecen's official outcomes. Scores are for internal use only, and you are not told yours. The university looks at your overall performance. There are four outcomes: a first-year place, a place on the Basic Medicine Course (a preparatory course), rejection, or an offer of a different programme.

What it costs: For students admitted in 2026/27: Medicine USD 16,900 a year, Dentistry USD 17,500, Pharmacy USD 8,000. The Basic Medicine Course costs USD 7,500. Health insurance, a medical checkup and a student card are included.

Ask Debrecen in writing how its students move into first year. In 2025, one applicant called it no guarantee. In 2026, former students said they learned a lot. One 2025 applicant reported about 14 days to accept.

How do I apply to Debrecen, step by step?

You apply yourself: we are not an agent, and we do not apply for you.

  1. Apply early. Medicine closed early last year because so many applied. See the deadline.
  2. Pay the university's fees. See the amounts.
  3. Get your exam date. Debrecen does not publish exam dates. Ask the university in writing when and where you sit. We are not one of its representatives.
  4. Prepare from the official lists and the sample tests.
  5. Sit the written test, in English: biology plus chemistry or physics.
  6. Sit the oral exam in biology and your second subject. See the oral topics applicants report.
  7. Get your outcome. You never see a score. See the possible outcomes.

When is the deadline for 2027?

Apply by 15 May 2027 for September 2027 entry. The university says the application period opens later this year. Medicine and Dentistry can close early when many people apply, as they did for September 2026 entry, so apply early. Check the application page to see if it is open.

Chemistry or physics: which should I choose?

Both are official options, each with its own topic list and sample test. Most applicants call chemistry easier than biology. One 2025 applicant called physics very easy. Pick the one your school taught in more depth. Our practice covers chemistry only.

What happens in the oral?

You face an oral exam in biology and your second subject. One 2025 applicant described one examiner per subject. Questions came from topics like digestion, the heart and DNA (2025). Some 2026 applicants were mostly asked why they chose medicine. Our practice does not simulate the oral. See the topics applicants report, and practise out loud.

Does a degree get me out of the exam?

With a bachelor's or master's degree, you may get a full or partial exemption from the exam. The interview is still required.

Do I need an English certificate?

The entrance exam page asks for no separate English certificate. The exam itself is in English. Check Debrecen's application page for its certificate rules before you apply.

What does the university charge?

  • To apply and sit the exam: USD 150 to apply, plus USD 350 for the entrance exam.

The exam

What it tests

Biology has 16 official topics. Topics 1 to 8 cover cells and genes, and topics 9 to 16 cover human body systems.

Chemistry covers general, inorganic and organic chemistry. Physics has six groups: mechanics, thermodynamics, vibrations and waves, electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and modern physics. The recommended textbooks are US college books: Sadava's Life (8th edition), McMurry and Fay's Chemistry (6th edition) and Serway's College Physics (9th edition).

Last year (2026): Debrecen does not publish exam dates. In 2026, Medicine and Dentistry stopped taking applications early for September 2026 entry, because so many people applied.
